Why your tapes won't last
VHS tape degrades whether it's played or not. The magnetic layer weakens, colours shift, and in humid climates like Waikato, mould can destroy a tape completely in as little as a decade. Most tapes recorded in the 1980s and 90s are already showing deterioration. Digitising now captures everything that's still there.
